Teaching Sports at School

Teaching Sports at School – Volunteer in Thailand

At Volunt2Thai, volunteers support local village schools by teaching sports and organizing fun physical activities for children. Sports are an important part of education and help children develop confidence, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle.

By volunteering in sports education, you can inspire children, share your passion for movement, and become a positive role model in the community.

Sports Activities in Local Village Schools

Volunt2Thai works with several small village schools where children aged 5–12 years participate in sports and physical education activities. Volunteers usually organize 90-minute sports classes, often divided into two sessions of 45 minutes.

Each day you may visit a different school and introduce children to new games, exercises, and sports activities.

Popular sports include:

  • Football (soccer)

  • Sepak Takraw (Thai kick volleyball)

  • Basketball

  • Volleyball

  • Badminton

  • Athletics and relay races

  • Gymnastics and movement games

The focus is not on professional competition but on participation, teamwork, and fun.

V2T Thai Boxing Gym – Sports Volunteering in Thailand

The V2T Thai Boxing Gym is proudly sponsored by GYM Dordrecht – Liliane and Fred van Oijen. Additional support comes from generous friends and partners including   This sports facility is part of the Volunt2Thai volunteer program in Thailand and is used by both international volunteers and local children from nearby schools and villages.   During the long school holidays in April and May, as well as throughout October, the gym is open all day for training, sports activities, and youth programs. During the regular school year, the facility is mainly used in the late afternoon for sports training and youth development activities.  The gym provides Muay Thai boxing equipment in different sizes, allowing both children and volunteers to train safely and comfortably.

But there are also many other sports

In Thailand's vibrant school culture, sports serve as more than just physical activities—they're avenues for character building and community cohesion. Across the nation, students engage in a diverse array of sports, including football, sepak takraw, badminton, basketball, Muay Thai, track and field, table tennis, and swimming.

Basketball gains traction, fostering camaraderie and leadership among players, while Muay Thai imparts discipline and respect in its practitioners. Track and field events promote resilience and determination, while table tennis and swimming offer opportunities for individual mastery and personal growth.

Through these sports, Thai schools instill values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and community, shaping students into well-rounded individuals poised for success both on and off the field.

Football reigns supreme, with students honing their skills on school pitches and competing fervently in inter-school tournaments. Meanwhile, sepak takraw showcases agility and teamwork, while badminton fosters precision and strategy. We work with many schools in our area, depending on the size of the school the age and number of students varies.

Besides football, Thai boxing, baseball, and other sports like sepak takraw, (kick volleyball), the girls especially love to play basketball.

The sports mats in our Muay Thai gym are also very suitable for yoga exercises.

We thank the Austrian ambassador

The Austrian Ambassador in Doha, Mag. Karin Fichtinger-Grohe, organized a team ball at the Austrian Football Association (OEFB) and sent it to the Austrian Embassy in Bangkok, in coordination with THAILAND-COME TOGETHER-NETWORKING on Koh Samui. On January 11, 2023, at 9.15 a.m., the football was personally handed over by our Ambassador, Mag. Wilhelm Donko, to the president of the Austrian association www.volunt2thai.com, Mr. Raimund Wagner, as part of a cordial exchange of information.

Teaching Sports / Physical Education in the surrounding schools

Sport Projects
We are surrounded by a few little villages, where there are a total of 6 schools with children aged from 5 to 12 years old. We would love to offer them sports classes of 90 minutes per day maximum -two times 45mins for example- and we could only offer one school per day, so you would teach in a different school every day. Most of the kids here are strong and physical since they are used to playing outside or helping their grandparents in the farms.

Often the parents do not live with the children so the grandparents are the ones who take care of them. The problem is that they do not know how to use this strength and are surely very talented, with a lot of potential. That is why we need someone to enhance their predispositions and allow them to make progress and blossom. Their talents have to be developed and supported.
The sport you offer can be anything you can think of, any type of physical activity. Team games are ideal in order to have everyone participate or relay races, gymnastics, football, volleyball, baseball etc… But keep in mind that our resources are limited, we only have a volleyball court, some gym rings left from a previous sport teacher, and many wide grass fields.

You must be innovative with the little resources we have for you here, creating games and sports without any tools or infrastructure. You could also bring some small pieces of sport equipment as a donation (eg: a baseball bat) that you can leave for the kids when you leave. You must also take into account that depending on the seasons (raining seasons or heat waves) there may be less possibilities to practice sport with the children everyday.
Sports volunteers need passion to get people moving in good spirits and making sure everyone can be part of the moment. You need the ability to make fast changes in your plans, but also find a way to communicate without being able to use the same language, maybe even just using a clear body language. You need to be able to spread your passion and enthusiasm for sport through your teachings.

Especially for kids, you must be able to include fun in your classes, creating a sense of concentration and being fully present in the instructor’s role that you’ll be playing. All kinds of experiments in this area are more than welcome; even if it demands you to work in an uncertain environment maybe under a little pressure, then let this be an opportunity for you to learn something too!!
